Volunteer at DENS

'The biggest contributor to DENS is not government, council or business; it's our volunteers giving their time, free of charge.'
- DENS Board Member

Why volunteer?
Volunteering is simple. It's about giving your time to do something useful, without getting paid.

In return you get the satisfaction of time and effort well spent. In addition, volunteering can be a great way to meet new people, learn new skills, gain useful experience, as well as to have lots of fun!

There is a whole range of voluntary opportunities at DENS for people with all sorts of skills, experiences and backgrounds.

DENS Volunteers
DENS is very proud of its volunteer support and could not operate efficiently without the many hours put in by a large team of over 130 volunteers!

Volunteers work in every area of DENS, some helping out every week, some once a month and some once a year - no matter how much time you have to give DENS, it will always be appreciated.

Voluntary opportunities include:

  • Administration
  • Helping with marketing & fundraising
  • Helping at DENS events
  • Working with DENS service users at the Night Shelter or Day Centre
  • Practical work such as gardening, decorating, driving and odd jobs
  • Helping with the DENS Distribution Service

Volunteer Experiences
We asked people why they volunteered at DENS; here are some of their answers:

"To meet new people, to learn other experiences - homelessness, alcohol & drug awareness."

"To help others by giving something back to society, at the same time gain knowledge that may help myself in the future."

"I feel grateful for what I have and want to help others who are less fortunate. I like meeting new people and think DENS is a very good cause."

We also asked if they would recommend volunteering to their friends/family or colleagues and if so, why?

"Yes - great sense of satisfaction and it is fun!"

"Yes, good sense of achievement, nice to give something back to others - and it's a nice atmosphere at DENS."

"Yes, as a way of extending ones personal abilities."
