Hemel Hillbuster

Our epic and legendary Hemel Hillbuster sportive is back for the 4th year!
This popular cycling event, giving you a choice of either a 60km or 100km route, takes you over challenging Chiltern hills, around stunning countryside and through beautiful villages around Dacorum. The event starts and finishes in iconic Gadebridge park, which has played host to recent Tour of Britain races.

Location and routes

The Hemel Hillbuster starts and finishes in Gadebridge Park, Hemel Hempstead HP1 3AQ. There’s a public car park onsite for up to 300 cars, plus street parking nearby.


A superb cycling route including typically challenging Chilterns hills, out to Whipsnade, through the pretty villages of Ivinghoe, Aldbury, Cholesbury as far as Chesham, then returning via Botley and Bovingdon. If you’re short of time or warming up for summer cycling, then this is the route for you!

For practised riders, the ultimate Chilterns challenge, conceived by experienced local rider and club cyclist to delight and please you! Heading out towards Dunstable Downs, via Aldbury and Cholesbury, then out to Wendover, Cadsden, Great Missenden, Chartridge, Chesham and returning via Botley and Bovingdon.

Whichever route you choose, we advise you to be prepared and train! A good level of fitness is required to take part. Please seek advice from your GP if necessary.

Please ensure your bike is in good working order before attempting the Hemel Hillbuster and bring spare tubes, tyre levers and pump with you! Basic bike repair kit and pump will also be available at our feed stations.

All participants must wear a safety helmet and we recommend safety clothing.

Cyclists under the age of 18 must have parental consent and cyclists under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Both routes will be fully signed and there’s a mobile technical support vehicle, first aid and food stations along the route.

We recommend that you take out a British Cycling Ride membership to benefit from individual insurance cover on this ride and any others you may participate in within the year of cover

All participants MUST wear a safety helmet and we recommend safety clothing.

Date and Time

Sunday 28th April 2019.

100km route

Registration opens from 8:30am the first group will set off from 9am. You’ll need to set off by 9:30am and finish the course by 3:30pm.

60km route

Please register from 9:15am. You’ll need to set off by 10am (although you can set off earlier). You must finish the course by 3:30pm.

All riders will be given a safety briefing and set off in groups of up to 20 riders

Your entry fee covers the costs of putting on the event, signing the route, water and feed stations, First Aid cover & mobile mechanical. Whilst we don’t ask for a minimum sponsorship, we rely on donations to support our work and urge you to raise what you can.

The Registration Process

When you register online with British Cycling, you will have to sign up for a free British Cycling account if you don't have one already. Once you've signed up you'll receive a confirmation email to the email address which you provided. Any problems,  email fundraising@dens.org.uk or call us on 01442 800268.

Before event day, you’ll receive a full rider's info pack by email confirming timings, routes and parking details.

Online registration will close at midnight on Tuesday 23rd April (or earlier subject to us reaching maximum capacity).

On event day, we’ll issue you a rider number with an emergency number on the reverse to attach to your bike. You’ll need to confirm your emergency contact details to us. Any riders under 18 will need to provide parental consent to take part.

All about DENS:

Do I need to raise sponsorship money?

We ask everyone taking part to raise a minimum suggested sponsorship of £20 as your entry fee covers the costs of putting on the event.

How will my sponsorship make a difference?

£20 will fully equip one of the bedrooms at our emergency accommodation with soft furnishings to ensure a comfortable warm home for a rough sleeper.

DENS do so much more than just providing a roof and a bed. We’re here to help homeless people, and those on the edge of homelessness, take the next positive steps in their lives.



Can sign up on the day?

Yes- Registration on the day is: £40 for the 100km route and £35 for the 60km

I’ve registered for one route but would like to change to the other route on the day, can I do this?

Yes – To switch from the 60k to the 100k you will need to pay an additional £5, please contact us on 01442 800268 or join the On The Day Registrations queue when you arrive in the morning.

If you’ve signed up for the 100k you can return via the shorter route by following the green 60km signs where the route splits at Cholesbury.

Can I get a refund if I can no longer take part?

Entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.


The Route

How long will it take me to complete the course?

It all depends on your cycling speed and the times/ length of each stop you make.

Average finishing times are: 1.5-4 hours for 60km and 3-6 hours for 100km.

Where are the food stations located?

At Wigginton (for the 60km and 100km) and Ballinger for the 100km where a selection of refreshments will be available to everyone taking part.

How do I find my way around the route?

Map files for navigation devices will be sent to you by email, It is your responsibility to read and understand the course which will be well signed on the day.
