Dacorum's own cycling sportive is back for its third year!

"First-class sportive, very well organised, excellent routes"

This popular event takes you on a choice of 60km or 100km routes over challenging Chiltern hills and through beautiful countryside and villages around Dacorum. The event starts and finishes in iconic Gadebridge park, which has played host to the Mens and Womens Tours of Britain in recent years.

Due to increased demand there will be limited signups on the day this year so BOOK NOW to secure your place.

Whether you've taken part in the Hillbuster before or this will be your first time, you can look forward to:

  • Easy online entry through the British Cycling website
  • Signed & marshalled routes over challenging hills and stunning countryside
  • Feed stations on the routes, and a goody bag and medal (new and improved design) at the finishing line
  • Qualified first aid and bike doctor on call

Location and routes

The Hemel Hillbuster will start and finish in Gadebridge Park, Hemel Hempsted HP1 3AQ. There is public car parking at Gadebridge Park for up to 300 cars, please do not park on the grass. There is also on street parking nearby.


A wonderful route for cyclists, including typically challenging Chilterns hills, out to Whipsnade, through pretty villages of Ivinghoe, Aldbury, Cholesbury as far as Chesham and then returning via Botley and Bovingdon. If you are short of time or warming up for summer cycling then this is the route for you!

For practised riders, the ultimate Chilterns challenge, conceived by experienced local rider and club cyclist to delight and please you! Heading out towards Dunstable Downs, via Aldbury and Cholesbury, then out to Wendover, Cadsden, Great Missenden, Chartridge, Chesham and returning via Botley and Bovingdon.

Please note that any cyclist under the age of 18 must have parental consent to take part and any cyclist under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. We recommend that you have passed your cycling proficiency test and have a year’s cycling experience on the roads.

Be well prepared! A good level of fitness is required to take part. Please seek advice from your GP if necessary.

Please ensure that your bike is in good working order before attempting the Hemel Hillbuster and bring spare tubes, tyre levers and pump with you! Basic bike repair kit and pump will also be available at our feed stations.

Current routes are provisional and are subject to change before final routes are issued on Mon 16th April at the same time as the final Rider Pack.

The routes will be fully signed and marshalled and there will be a support vehicle, food stations and first aid. The event HQ will have hot and cold refreshments for friends and family as well as riders and there will be a BBQ at the end of the event. Qualified first aid will be on site and mobile technical support will be available.

All participants MUST wear a safety helmet and we recommend safety clothing.

Date and Time

The event will take place on Sunday 22nd April 2018.

All riders will be given a safety briefing and set off in groups of up to 20 riders, no matter which route they are following.
Registration opens from 8:30am for the 100km route, the first group will set off from 9am.

For the 100k route, you will need to set off by latest 9:30am, and finish the course and be back at the registration area by 3:30pm.

For the 60km route, please register from 9:15am. You will need to set off by latest 10am although you can set off earlier. You must finish the course and be back at the registration area by 3:30pm.

Your entry fee covers the costs of putting on the event, water and feed stations, First Aid cover at HQ and mobile support on the course, mechanical support on the day and full route signage and marshalling.

We do not stipulate sponsorship from entrants although we are constantly trying to raise funds for our much needed services so would be delighted to receive any additional donations at www.justgiving.com/dens or on the day. You may also wish to set up your own JustGivingVirgin Money or BT MyDonate page to invite friends and family to sponsor you; please get in touch on fundraising@dens.org.uk or 01442 800268 if you would like any support with your fundraising.

The Registration Process

When you register online with British Cycling, you will have to sign up for a free British Cycling account if you don't have one already. Once you've signed up you'll receive a confirmation email to the email address which you provided. If you have any problems, please email fundraising@dens.org.uk or call 01442 800268 for assistance.  On Monday 16th April 2018 you will receive a rider's information pack by email to confirm timings, routes and parking details.

Online registration will close at 12 noon on Thursday 19 April and after this time you will need to enter on the day.

Payment on the day can be made by cash, cheque or card. We are reliant on mobile signal for card payments on the day so it may be quicker to pay by cash or cheque!

At registration, on the morning of the event, you will receive a rider number with an emergency number on the reverse to attach to your bike with cable ties. You will need to confirm your emergency contact details to us. Any riders under 18 will need to provide parental consent to take part.

For the protection of members and all those involved in the management of registered and insured cycling events, British Cycling provides through its public liability insurance policy, an indemnity, limited to £10,000,000 for legal liabilities arising from claims made against an event organiser, official or participant that involves either bodily injury or property damage to a third party.
