A place to stay and intensive support under one roof
The Elms was purpose-built in 2015 as a 44 bed temporary accommodation unit for single homeleess people. The facility is run by DENS in partnership with Dacorum Borough Council and relies on support from the local community.
The building, which is protected by a full CCTV system, is on 5 floors with storage and office accommodation in the lower ground floors, an office, training suites, interview rooms, a medical room, kitchen and communal areas on the fround floor and three floors of bedroom accommodation with self-service laundry. There is also a terrace and garden, which provides a worthwhile activity for our residents.
Referrals to The Elms come from Dacorum Borough Council, DENS Day Centre and through other local organisations.
Residents are allocated a key worker who produces an individual action plan drawing in other agencies as necessary.
Specific issues are addressed such as mental health, substance/alcohol misuse and relationship breakdown.
Basic, key life and employment skills are worked on in preparation for a planned, positive move-on through our Equipped to Change programme. Many residents improve their confidence, self-esteem and communication skills whilst at The Elms.
Each resident has a small but functional bedroom with a pod providing shower and toilet.
Residents with dogs can be accommodated.
Volunteers are on hand to socialise with our residents and to provide some fun, distraction and a listening ear.
Meals are provided by a catering company. Much of the food cooked at The Elms was kindly donated to our Foodbank or, in the summer months, comes from our allotment in the garden.
The Elms is open 24 hours a day. Emergency overnight accommodation is offered via a 'Crash Pad'.
DENS Rent Aid offers opportunities for residents to progess from supported accommodation to independent living.
Residents typically stay for around 3 months. Residents face life-changing choices and are required to behave in an appropriate manner, to engage with their key-workers and to take advantage of training and planned activites.
