At DENS, we believe that no one should have to make the heartbreaking choice between keeping their beloved pet and having a safe place to stay. That’s why we’re proud to offer a pet-friendly Day Centre and accommodation services, ensuring that people experiencing homelessness and their companions can remain together in secure and supportive spaces.
Leading the way
We’re thrilled that The Elms, our 44-bed hostel in Hemel Hempstead, was the first in the UK to be accredited under the StreetVet Accredited Hostel Scheme. This national initiative, launched by charity StreetVet, ensures hostels are equipped to meet the needs of pet-owning residents by introducing robust health, hygiene and safety policies, alongside comprehensive training and support for staff.
Through this scheme, pet owners at The Elms benefit from:
- Access to veterinary care including telemedicine, transport to vet practices, and emergency kennelling.
- Monthly health visits from StreetVet.
- Provision of pet essentials, such as food, bedding, and flea treatments.
- Christmas gifts for pets.
- A welcoming environment where they can focus on rebuilding their lives without being separated from their pets.
- Support from StreetVet six months after leaving The Elms.
