What is Payroll Giving?
Payroll Giving (also known as Give As You Earn) is an easy and tax-efficient way for employees to make regular donations to their favourite charities straight from their salary.
For DENS, this means helping us provide vital support to people facing homelessness, poverty and social exclusion in our community.

How does it work?
- Employees sign up to donate through your company’s Payroll Giving scheme.
- Each payday, the employee’s donation is deducted from their gross salary, meaning they pay less while DENS receives the full amount. For example, a £10 donation only costs a basic-rate taxpayer £8, and for higher-rate taxpayers, it’s even less. This makes Payroll Giving one of the most tax-efficient ways to support your community.
- Donations cost employees up to 45% less thanks to tax relief (see table).
- Your payroll team sends donations to a Payroll Giving Agency (PGA), who then distributes funds to DENS or any other charities chosen by employees.

What is a Payroll Giving Agency (PGA)?
Payroll Giving Agencies are approved by HMRC and work directly with employers to manage Payroll Giving schemes. They handle everything from employee sign-up to transferring donations to the chosen charities. To run a Payroll Giving scheme, your organisation must be registered with an HMRC-approved PGA.
There are several PGAs listed on HMRC’s website. Below are three of the largest and most trusted agencies that DENS recommends:
What role does your payroll department play?
Your payroll team is key to making Payroll Giving work, but the process is simple and requires minimal effort. Most modern payroll systems already have an easy option to enable Payroll Giving, often just a tick-box feature.
Once employees sign up, your payroll department will:
- Deduct the agreed donation from their salary each payday (weekly or monthly).
- Send the total amount collected to your chosen Payroll Giving Agency (PGA).
The PGA will then distribute donations to the selected charities. They’ll also be available to support your payroll team and answer any questions throughout the process.
The impact of your donations
Every contribution helps DENS provide accommodation, food and support for those in need. For example:
- £10 a month could help provide a shower and a hot meal for two rough sleepers at our Day Centre
- £25 a month could provide a three-day food parcel for an individual facing food poverty
- £50 a month could provide four food hygiene courses for participants at our community café
