Since 2003 DENS has supported thousands of homeless and vulnerable individuals. All of this has been achieved with the help of over 250 volunteers, as well as through the backing of local community groups, schools, faith groups, businesses and with the assistance from a number of charitable trusts.
DENS began in 1998 as a temporary night shelter, rotating between 7 churches during winter. In 2003 the permanent Night Shelter opened, which was replaced in 2015 by The Elms.
Jimmy is a 61 year old man who first came to DENS in March 2014 after his marital relationship broke down. On Jimmy’s return to the UK in February 2014 he discovered that, since he had been out of the UK for over 3 months, he would have to wait a further 3 months before being entitled to any benefits.
