Frequently asked questions

Who can participate in the event?

Everyone! There is no minimum age for entry, however all participants aged 15 and under must be accompanied by a registered participating, over 18-year old adult, who will take full responsibility for them throughout the Castle Walk and must read and sign the terms and conditions on their behalf.

How long will it take me to complete the walk?
  • The 2 mile route is suitable for all, even furry legged friends. We expect this to take between 40 minutes and 2 hours, factoring in playground and doggy water stops.
  • Our 10 mile route is more challenging and based on your fitness level, here’s a general idea of what to expect:
    • Experienced walkers with a high level of fitness can anticipate completing the route in about 2-3 hours.
    • Participants with a good fitness level might take around 3-4 hours.
    • Those embracing the challenge and putting forth their best effort may take 4 or more hours.

No matter your pace, your participation and commitment are what truly makes a difference. Thank you for supporting DENS.

What is the terrain like on the routes?

A combination of challenging hills, flat roads, woodland trails and beautiful countryside fields and villages around Dacorum.

The route passes along canal paths, including small sets of steps to leave and re-join the route paths. Please be aware that there are narrow walking points on the route, some steep inclines and declines, plus walking through muddy areas and paths close to the canal. Appropriate long-distant footwear is required. Unfortunately, both routes are not wheelchair accessible.

Route maps will be shared soon.

Can I bring my dog?

Our 2 mile route is aimed at families and well behaved dogs are very welcome too. However, we know for some dogs 10 miles may be more appropriate. It is your responsibility to be confident that they are capable of completing the distance that you choose. Please be aware of the following requirements:

  • I understand my dog must be kept on a lead at all times.
  • I understand that I am fully responsible for clearing up after my dog and carrying enough water for them.
  • I understand that my dog’s health is my responsibility. I will consider the weather on the day and understand that there will be no veterinary healthcare at the event.
  • I am aware that the route passes along narrow canal paths, including small sets of steps to leave and re-join the route paths. There are narrow walking points on the route, some steep inclines and declines, loose stones and pebbles, plus there could be some slippery and muddy areas.

Where can I park?

There is limited parking at Berkhamsted Castle. There are a number of pay and display car parks close by to the Castle, including:

  • Waitrose multi-story
  • Berkhamsted Train Station
  • Car park near Millennium Park
  • Various off-road parking
